This is a basic emulation FAQ
written to help out newbies to the emulation scene. Emulators
are PC programs that act like console or arcade video game
systems. They are available all over the Internet, as are
games for the various systems, which are known as "roms."
Dos emulators are faster than Windows emulators (thus better
for low-end PCs), but may have compatibility problems that
Windows emulators do not have. The file Dos4gw.exe is necessary
to use most Dos emulators.
Nesticle is a Nintendo emulator
that almost perfectly imitates the NES 8-bit system. The Dos
version is faster than the Windows version, but the latter
allows internet gaming and works with DirectX drivers (available
at www.microsoft.com),
allowing better game controller and sound support. Biones
is not as good as Nesticle, but has a framerate hotkey that
makes it easy to simulate tecmo seasons without much hassle.
The Super Nintendo editors are
ZSNES (Dos) and Snes9xw (Windows). ZSNES is the best Super
Nintendo emulator, but is not quite as compatible with game
controllers as Snes9xw. I would recommend using ZSNES due
to its great speed and tons of options. If you can't get your
gamepad to work with it, try Snes9xw.
In order to use an emulator,
just download it and unzip it into a folder (using Winzip
from www.winzip.com or
a similar unzipper). Download the rom(s) you want to play
and unzip them into the same folder. That's it! Just run the
executable (.exe) file for the emulator (ie. Nesticle.exe)
and choose your game! The emulators have GUIs (graphical user
interfaces) that allow you to change your options, save games,
etc. from a main screen. This screen can usually be accessed
by pressing your Escape key on the keyboard.
